"INSIDE THE ATOM" Part 3
Description
Summary: LS, from water: sign on shore" Picture Taking Prohibited". Buses passing sign, "Atomic Energy Project". Buses are stopped at entrance to plant and checked by Security police. Pan, workers entering plant. FS, worker, walking on factory grounds, carrying piece of radioactive metal suspended from rod. CUs, minute fragment of matter is checked under microscope. Cut-ins Chinese using primitive tools working on airstrip; coal mining. Animation: illustrating that the atom resembles a minute solar system. The heart of the atom is the nucleus. Splitting nucleus with the neutron, etc. Several scenes, Exterior: uranium mine at Great Bear Lake; Nuclear Fission Plant at Chock River, Canada. MSs, Dr Keyes, director; Dr Lewis, KF Topper. Interiors Laboratory: a four inch lead wall block to protect technicians working on radio active matter. CUs, weighing chemical element. Observing weight indicator on scale through microscope. Sequence: small pieces of film sensitive to radio-activity and worn by all employees, are checked for radiation. An employee, who may possibly be affected by radiation, is fingerprinted. Sequence: Isotopes are carried into vault, and checked. Equipment being examined with radio-isotope to check for radiation. Sequence: isotopes being chemically refined in laboratory. Sequence: isotope arriving at cancer hospital and being unpacked. Sequence: a patient who has drunk a solution containing the isotope is examined in clinic. Using an instrument that picks up signals from the isotope the doctor can tell where the isotope is concentrated thus locating the cancer. Each impulse of radiation is amplified as clicking sounds on clock. CUs, atomic scientists at work in laboratories. Worker carrying piece of radio-active a material suspended from rod.
