GEN GEORGE S PATTON, JR.: 1943: MSs, Lt Gen Patton examines field-map under camouflage netting. Other officers are in the scene with the general. ITALIAN-PRISONERS: Messina, Sicily,Italy: 08/l7/43: Hundreds of Italian prisoners carrying white flags are marched along wrecked streets. PATTON.: Messina Sicily: 08/17/43: CU, General Patton smiling. (A very rare shot) MSs, Gen Patton, Maj Gen Lucian K. Truscott, and a Brig Gen identified as Hobart S Gay in conversation near jeep. CU, Patton, MS, Patton in jeep looking at map, speaks to officer. SIGNAL CORPS CAMERAMAN.: LS, US Army cameraman with Eyemo shooting smoke and flames pouring up from behind wall. Head-on shots, RV, splft column of US soldiers move into town. ENGINEERS BLOWING BYPASS.: Milazzo, Sicily: demolition crew set charge in brick wall. LS, dynamite exploding. DESTRUCTION IN SICILY.: 1943: MSs, CUs, supplies and vehicles left behind by enemy in wrecked streets. INTERROGATION OF PRISONERS.: Milazzo, Sicily: 08/15/43: Lt Col J A Heintges, 3rd Bn, 7th Inf, interrogates two German prisoners captured by American paratroopers. CU, one of the prisoners smiling. FREIGHT YARD AREA.: 1943: VS, ruins of freight yards in Sicily; abandoned supplies in Milazzo. TERRAIN.: Messina: 08/17/43: LS, overlooking town. VS, rough terrain the US troops fought on. Recon troops move into Messina, some leading mules. (These are the first Allied-troops to enter.) PIPER CUB ON RECON MISSION.: Near Randazzo, Sicily: 08/1743: Seq: Piper Cub taking off from field on a reconnaisance mission over enemy territory near Randazzo. Radioman in plane contacts ground firing station. Cut to men of the 1st Bn, 60th FA, receiving notifiation of enemy position. Men at plotting board and calculators. Seq: Field artillery units taking up firing positions. LHSs, several Hows firing on distant terrain. MESSINA.: 08/17/43: CU, road sign: "Messina" VS, US vehicles and men pass through rubble-strewn streets. US and British soldiers start to clear wreckage from waterfront. In bg, the Italian mainland burns. Dolly shot, terrific wreckage in main section of Messina. The 157th Inf, 45th Div. marches into Messina. Commandos of the British Army stop beside bombed streets to cook. British commandos round up Italian prisoners in center of town. LSs, ferries at Messina. Ferry building and ship sunk close by. Italy burns in bg. GEN GEORGE S PATTON, JR.: Sicily: 1943: Short scene, Gen Patton in armored car passes camera. Jeep is halted at intersection as cameramen snap pictures. Two halftracks speed down streets of Messina. MS, Gens Patton and Lucian K Truscott speak to British officer at City Hall after surrender.MLS, RV, statue of Neptune near harbor. Other monuments in destroyed town. "DUCE" appears on one of the few remaining buildings.
