P-38s strafe the Citadel; low level shots. Barely visible are white flags which Germans raise in surrender. RVs, US troops slowly enter St Malo's outlying districts. Head-ons, infantrymen race past burning ruins. Excellent sequence; German officers of garrison surrender; exiting from fortification as US soldiers watch, The Commander of the German garrison is driven away in a jeep. Numerous scenes, German enlisted men exit from cave- like fortress under the direction of a German officer. A drunken German officer engages a US soldier in conversation. Another German calls him away. CUs, of the staggering soldier. RVs, German soldiers pass through antitank barriers as US soldiers watch. VS, long column of prisoners marches in streets.
