SURRENDER OF SINGAPORE Part 1
Description
Summary: Int, Municipal Building during signing of surrender. General Itagaki and his staff seated around conference table. Admiral Lord Louig Mountbatten, Supreme Allied Commander, S E Asia, and his staff enter and seat themselves at table. Admiral Mountbatten then reads a note from the Japanese marshal originally scheduled to sign surrender, asking to be excused because of illness and appointing an alternate, General Itagaki. Mountbatten reads terms of the surrender and says in part "When I visited the beaches yesterday men were landing in an endless stream. As I speak there are 10O,000 men ashore. This invasion would have taken place on the 9th of September whether the Japanese had resisted or not. I wish to make this clear, the surrender today is no negotiated surrender. The Japanese are submitting to superior forces now massed here...". Surrender papers are then turned over to the Japanese general for his signature. He signs; papers are returned to Admiral Mountbatten. NOTE: Entire reel is underexposed but is kept for its historical value. Sound quality is good. virtually the same footage, properly exposed and in silent form, is in ADC 9895.
