Description
OF NEWSFILM RELEASE OFFICE OF ASSISTANT SECRETARY OF DEFENSE (PUBLIC AFFAIRS) UNITED STATES OF AMERICA WASHINGTON, D.C. - 20301 PLEASE NOTE DATE IMMEDIATE RELEASE June 29, 1971 OXford 76161 Number 102-71 Footage: 58' 16mm Color Master Room 2E 773 Time: 1:35 CARRIER CREW ASSISTS P.O.W./M.I.A. FAMILIES (Official U. S. Navy Film Released by the Department of Defense) The officers and men of the aircraft carrier USS JOHN F. KENNEDY have launched a new program to assist the families of Prisoners of War and men Missing in Action (POW/MIA) in the Norfolk area, The Navymen have volunteered their time to help the POW/MIA wives with any household chore, from minor repair work to painting. Jobs that would normally be done by their husbands. Each of the 21 POW/MIA families in the Norfolk area has a sponsor on board the KENNEDY who visits them periodically. When the families need assistance the sponsor determines how many men, and with what skills, are required to complete the job. A date is set and the job is done. The families provide the necessary material, paint, lumber, etc., and the crew provides the manpower and skill. There is also a "trouble desk hot line" set up to handle requests from the wives. The two-month-old project has already provided assistance to more than half the POW families in the area. The project will continue as long as the KENNEDY is in port. When the carrier deploys again, another aircraft carrier will probably be encouraged to continue the project and help ease the burden of the families of those American men held prisoner, or missing in Southeast Asia.
