S. AIR FORCE PILOTS RESCUED IN SOUTHEAST ASIA APRIL 7, 1968 (Official U. S. Air Force Film Released by the Department of Defense) On April 7, 1968, Air Force Major Thomas Tapman, assigned to the 37th Tactical Fighter Wing, and Captain Ebeu D. Jones, assigned to Detachment 1, 416th Tactical Fighter Squadron, were on a routine forward air controller (FAC) mission in Southeast Asia when an internal fire broke out on their aircraft. The two pilots bailed out. A "Jolly Green" HH-3E helicopter of the 37th Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Service was dispatched within minutes to the downed pilots' locations. Upon arriving on the scene, contact was made with the downed flyers and their collapsed parachutes were spotted. Captain Jones was the first to be pick up. Major Tapman's rescue was accomplished just 15 minutes later. After the recovery of the downed Air Force pilots, the helicopter returned to its home base with two more "satisfied customers" on board. The "Jolly Green" was piloted by Captain Harry W. Walker, of Granite City, Illinois. His co-pilot was Major Louis D. Yuhas, of Chaleroi, Pennsylvania. Affecting the rescues were Staff Sergeant Bernard W. Grau, from Faulkton, South Dakota, the chopper's flight mechanic, and Sergeant Michael R. Fraboni, from Virginia, Minnesota, the helicopter crew's para-medic. Both of the FAC pilots were shaken up but otherwise were in good condition when they were rescued. Motion picture photography of the rescues was accomplished by Sergeant Bradley W. Kirk, of Portsmouth, Virginia, assigned to the 600th Photo Squadron. - MORE - NOTE TO EDITORS: PLEASE CREDIT DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE IN TITLE OR COMMENTARY This motion film released to DOD pool member designated is for duplication and distri- bution to interested TV and newsreel pool members.
