(X) 19 January 1955 FORMIDABLE SEVENTH FLEET MAINTAINS CONSTANT VIGIL (Official Navy Footage Released by Department of Defense) A part of one of the most alert and powerful peacetime fighting forces the U.S. has ever maintained on the high seas, carriers and destroyers of the fornidable U.S. Seventh Fleet continue their unceasing vigil off the Chinese Nationalist stronghold of Fornosa. Dramatic sconos are obtained as the vessels roll and pitch heavily in the turbulent Formosan waters during ticklish resupply operations made even more hazardous as the carriors and destroyers take on fuel and supplies during a typhoon. As a training operation, swept-wing jets and propeller-driven planes stream into the air as they are launched by attack carriers of the massive striking force. Rockets and low-level dive bombers unleash their fury as they blast away at rocks located in waters off the Southern tip of Kyushu. Sequences show: (a) Refueling in the teeth of the gale. (b) Dramatic scenes of fleet operating in typhoon. (c) Signalman on bridge sends message to destroyer while mountainous seas break against side of carrier. (d) Jet and propeller driven planes take off to blast rocks used as targets. (e) Gunnery exercises of destroyers and carriers.
