SCOPE: This coverage is of the historic one-day test cruise of the U.S. Navy destroyer in which a coal-based oil powered the ship's steam boilers. BACKGROUND: The USS Johnston, a Naval Reserve Force Destroyer, steamed out of Philadelphia November 15 to become the first ship in history to use a coal- derived oil to power its engines. This test was part of project SEACOAL, a series of tests of liquid coal products to find an alternate fuel for petroleum-derived fuels currently used by Navy ships and aircraft. Thursday's underway trial did not determine, in itself, what fuel is ultimately selected for Navy use. Results from this and subsequent tests of coal- derived fuels will be provided to industry to assist them in producing a usable alternative. Fuel for this test, SEACOAL I, was provided by the Office of Coal Research, Department of Interior. The November 15 test involved one boiler fired with the test fuel. Loading of test fuel took place November 14. SEQUENCES Footage: Video: 87' Various scenes of the USS Johnston at the dock, firing up the boilers, casting off, getting under way, and steaming out of the harbor. NOTE TO EDITORS: Please credit Department of Defense in title or commentary. This motion picture released to UPI Newsfilm for duplication and distribution to interested television and newsfilm pool members. This original footage may not be cut and is to be returned within 72 hours to the Department of Defense Media Services Branch. Room 2E 773. the Pentagon. Washington. D. C. 20301.
