Description

OF DEPARTMENT NEWSFILM RELEASE OFFICE OF ASSISTANT SECRETARY OF DEFENSE (PUBLIC AFFAIRS) UNITED WASHINGTON, D.C. - 20301 STATES OF PLEASE NOTE DATE IMMEDIATE RELEASE June 6, 1968 OXford 7-5111 Number 168-68 Footage: 105' 16mm Color Master Room 2E 771 Time: 2:55 U. S. ARMY ELEMENTS PATROL ALONG KOREAN DMZ TO CHECK INFILTRATION BY NORTH KOREANS (Official U. S. Army Film Released by the Department of Defense) On the afternoon of April 27, 1968, a five-man squad from the U. S. Army's 2nd Infantry Division, conducted a 5,000-meter patrol into the southern sector of the Korean Demilitarized Zone. The mission of the five-man unit is to gather intelligence information concerning possible infiltration routes being used by North Korean agents crossing the DMZ into the Republic of Korea, and to engage any Communist elements attempting to cross into the United Nations sector. The U. S. Army forces in the area some 50 kilometers northwest of the city of Seoul are responsible for a 30 kilometer stretch along the DMZ. Travelling primarily along the fence marking the Military Demarcation Line, the surveillance patrol makes brief stops and the patrol leader looks through his binoculars, scouring the immediate vicinity for any signs of Communist activity. The radioman reports the patrol's findings to his superiors over the radio. Meanwhile, at their base, another soldier looks over the terrain along the MDL using a large scope of his rifle. In the late afternoon, the patrol returns to the outpost by following the fence along the DMZ. Before approaching the outpost, however, the patrol leader radios ahead and tells his superiors they are returning so they will not be mis- taken for a Communist infiltrating force. Though seldom does this type of patrol ever encounter North Korean elements, this is a means of checking the increased infiltration by the Communists into the country of South Korea. - More - NOTE TO EDITORS: PLEASE CREDIT DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE IN TITLE OR COMMENTARY This motion film released to DOD pool member designated is for duplication and distri- bution to interested TV and newsreel pool members.
