OF DEPARTMENT DEPARTMENT NEWSFILM RELEASE OFFICE OF ASSISTANT SECRETARY OF DEFENSE (PUBLIC AFFAIRS) UNITED AMERICA WASHINGTON, D.C. - 20301 STATES OF PLEASE NOTE DATE IMMEDIATE RELEASE June 11, 1968 OXford 75111 Number 169-68 Footage: 76' 16mm Color Master Room 2E 771 Time: 2:06 DELTA FALCON PROJECT SWOOPS DOWN ON VIET CONG IN SOUTH VIETNAM'S DELTA REGION (Official U. S. Army Film Released by the Department of Defense) The Delta Falcon Project is a combined operation being employed by U. S. Army aviation and ground units and ARVN (Army of the Republic of Vietnam) in the Mekong River Delta region south of Saigon, South Vietnam. The general concept is to apply the combat-tested principle of combining air reconnaissance, helicopter fire support, and infantry elements into a highly mobile strike force. OH-6A "Cayuse" helicopters provide the reconnaissance element of the Delta Falcon Project. They search for and find the enemy positions. The AH-1G "Cobra" gunship helicopters are the fire support or "aerial artillery" for the force. They soften up and fix the enemy into a specific area, and the infantry troops land in UH-1 "Huey" choppers and attack the Viet Cong positions. Under ideal conditions, the ground forces are dropped off in a landing zone situated SO the troops can assault through the objective area to the pick-up zone. The soldiers are picked up as soon as possible after the firefight is over. Any captured Viet Cong are also lifted out and taken back to the Allied base camp for interrogation. This film shows the mission of a Special Forces' Strike Force in the area near Chi Lang, South Vietnam, on May 9, 1968.
