OF DEPARTMENT NEWSFILM RELEASE OFFICE OF ASSISTANT SECRETARY OF DEFENSE (PUBLIC AFFAIRS) UNITED WASHINGTON, D.C. - 20301 STATES OF PLEASE NOTE DATE January 17, 1968 IMMEDIATE RELEASE Footage: 60' Time: 1:43 OXford 7-5111 Number: V-19-68 16mm color composite print Room 2E 771 NEW ARMY HELICOPTER HUNTS VIETCONG IN SOUTH VIETNAM (Official Department of Defense motion picture film by the U.S. Army under the direction of the MACV Office of Information.) In the Bien Hoa area of South Vietnam, the U.S. Army unveiled the OH-6A Cayuse Heli- copter, a new whirlybird that will serve as a light observation craft for rapid air reconnaissance and limited gunship support. The versatile new Army chopper can vary its flying speed from 60 to 120 miles per hour, has a crew of three and packs a powerful punch with its XM-27 Mini-gun that fires 7.62 Nato ammunition at rates between 2000 and 4000 rounds per minute. The Cayuse weighs 2159 pounds, can climb 2120 feet per minute, and can carry enough C- rations to feed an entire company in the field for one day. It will replace the OH-23 and OH-13 observation helicopters and the 0-1 observation plane now in use in South Vietnam (seen in scenes b & c) . Here, on a mission north of Ben Hoa, the Cayuse attacks Viet Cong ground positions ad fires upon a sampan concealed along a canal bank. Now serving with the 3rd and 7th squadrons of the U.S. Army's 17th Cavalry, the Cayuse is proving that it is as rugged as the Indian for which it is named. The Cayuse is manufactured by the Hughes Tool Company's Aircraft Division of Culver City, California.
