Description

DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE OFFICE OF NEWS SERVICES THE PENTAGON, WASHINGTON 25, D.C. - LIBERTY 5-6700 AUDIO-VISUAL DIVISION RAD10-TV-NEWSFILM BRANCH ROOM 2E791 - EXTENSION 75111 (A) DUPE NEGATIVE TO: Release No. 198-65 FINE GRAIN TO; Footage: 290 September 29, 1965 1ST AIR CAVALRY DIVISION DEPLOYMENT IN REPUBLIC OF VIETEAM (Official Army footage released by Department of Defense) Film shows the movement of the advance party of the 1st Air Cavalry Division from Nha Trang, Vietnam, where it arrived and set up a temporary bivouse area, to the village of An Khe (pronounced On Key), approximately halfway up route 19 between a hilltop on the coast and Pleiku. The advance party consisted of about 500 men and their equipment. This operation was to insure that such a ground route would be kept open until the main body of the 101st Air Division arrived at An Khe. The air mobility concept is practical today because of several new factors: improvement in helicopter performance, maintainability, reliability, efficiency of aerial methods, and decreased weight of Army equipment. Sequences show: (a) HU-1B helicopters picking up troops. More helecopters coming in. (b) Pan to helicopters on field. (c) Troops board belicopters. (a) Helicopters take off and in flight. (e) Helicopters lending in the vicinity of Route 19. (2) Men of the 2nd Bn. 502ad Inf., 101st Abn Div. in position on both sides of route 19 in the Deo Mang pass as they "cover" incoming helicopter waves and provide security for their force. (s) Lit. Col. Wilfred K. C. Smith, commanding officer of the 2nd Ba. and some of his men on one of the highest spots overlooking the pass and the road below. (ia) Capt. Gerald Landry, C.O. of A Co. using a PRC-10 radio to put up a road block on the road running through the pass. (1) Troops on the move to their guard stations. (j) A Vietnamese bus coming up the pass. It is stopped by the interpreter and the bus is searched for arms or ammunition. (1) Bus departs.
