Description
OF DEPARTMENT NEWSFILM RELEASE OFFICE OF ASSISTANT SECRETARY OF DEFENSE (PUBLIC AFFAIRS) UNITED AMERICA WASHINGTON, D.C. - 20301 STATES OF PLEASE NOTE DATE IMMEDIATE RELEASE January 3, 1968 OXford 75111 Number 2-68 Footage: 71' 16mm Color Master Room 2E 771 Time: 1:59 MARINES SEARCH-AND-CLEAR NEAR DMZ (Official U. S. Marine Corps Film Released by the Department of Defense) Most combat operations by U. S. Marines in Vietnam do not have names and are rarely publicized. They are the regular, company-sized forays that individual company commanders plan and direct. This Leatherneck company is readying itself to launch a heavily-reinforced patrol against suspected North Vietnamese positions near Cam Lo, just south of the embattled Demilitarized Zone. Contacts with the enemy in this kind of "hit-and-run", "hide-and-seek" warfare are usually sudden and violent. This time the Marines are bolstered by a detachment of tanks that rumble carefully over the rugged terrain. But Marine riflemen are still the spearhead of these operations and alertness remains their greatest single ally in detecting the dug-in, well-camouflaged North Vietnamese. When sudden bursts of enemy fire rake the patrol, the Marines react with pre- planned precision and quickly establish fire superiority. The key to this fast, effective response is coordinated mutual support between tanks, mortars, and infantry. This is where preparation pays off. Every Leatherneck knows exactly what to do and relies instinctively on his fellow Marines. This is the tradition of teamwork in action. The initial Marine onslaught does not slacken its intensity when enemy fire sputters and dies. A sweep of the area turns up several dead North Vietnamese in full battle dress. Their weapons, still hot, lie muddied and useless. They will be collected and sent back to battalion intelligence for evaluation. As the probing Marines filter through the bullet-pocked treeline, it becomes evident the enemy has fled toward his nearby mountain redoubts. - MORE - NOTE TO EDITORS: PLEASE CREDIT DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE IN TITLE OR COMMENTARY This motion film released to DOD pool member designated is for duplication and distri- bution to interested TV and newsreel pool members.
