The experimentel craft, designed for a top speed of 4,000 miles per hour, flew so swiftly that NASA pilot Joe Wolker had to put the flaps down to slow the needle-nosed X-15. The previous aircraft speed record was 3,647 miles an hour set last week by Air Force Major Robert White in the same X-15. Mr. Walker's entire flight lasted 10 minutes. He hit 3,920 miles per hour in a steep clinib to 110,000 feet before gliding down for a landing.
