Description
Klein DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE OFFICE OF PUBLIC INFORMATION PICTORIAL BRANCH, NEWSREEL SECTION 2D780a THE PENTAGON NEWSREEL RELEASE No. 221-51 30 JULY 1951 FOOTAGE: 600 feet TO: Warner-Pathe News THE HUMAN SIDE OF THE KAESONG CONFERENCE (Official Army Footage Released by Department of Defense) Latest Signal Corps films of the "cease-fire" conference in Kaesong, Korea, show the human side at the conference headquarters sessions, (17 July 1951) The United Nations Delegates drive from Munsan along the roads and are greeted by waving and cheering North Korean men and women. Communist guards stare at the motorcade, and one turns his back on the procession. They cross a pontoon bridge spanning the Imjin River and drive up to the conference site. Groups of Communist and U. N. reporters and photographers snapped questions and shot pictures of the arriving delegations, The news media mix freely outside the conference chamber and area. They use sign language, gestures and interperters as they compare equipment, interview North Korean female officers, share refresh- ments and jockey for position for good shots of the delegates. The military personnel accompanying both sides mix freely and exchange plesantries. U. N. troops enjoy laying with North Korean children during a brief full. During a recess the two delegations posed for their pictures, after a lunch of Russian drinks and food served by the Communists delegation. The Communists (1 to r) Heleb-Fang, Tgng Hwa, Nam-D, Ll-Sang-Cho and Chang, remained stolid and solemn. But U. N. Delegates ROK Maj. Gen. Paik Sun Yup, Air Force Maj. Gen. Laurence Craigle, Vice A Admiral Turner C. Joy, Army Major General Henry L Hodes and Rear Admiral Arleigh (91-knot) Burke relaxed and smiled. A humorous incident is the appearance on the scene of two armed Communist soldiers who are hurriedly rerouted into the hills by a Communist officer. Following the session the delegates depart to await next conference.
