OF DUES NEWSFILM RELEASE OFFICE OF ASSISTANT SECRETARY OF DEFENSE (PUBLIC AFFAIRS) UNITED STATES OF Avenue WASHINGTON, D.C. - 20301 PLEASE NOTE DATE IMMEDIATE RELEASE October 27, 1966 OXford 75111 Number 243-66 Footage: 50' 16mm Color Master Room 2 E 765 MARINE BAND PERFORMS ON HOSPITAL SHIP REPOSE Not A.P.C. (Official U. S. Marine Corps film released by Department of Defense) Members of the 3rd Marine Division Band have used many modes of transportation since arriving in Vietnam, but this trip recalls the amphibious nature of all Marines as bandsmen take to landing craft to keep an engagement on the hospital ship, USS REPOSE. The band travels throughout the 3rd Marine Division to entertain Marines and Vietnamese as well. Music is a universal language which the villagers enjoy. When these bandsmen, who perform security duty as riflemen at night, travel to perform for an audience, their baggage often includes chairs and music stands as well as musical instruments. The band has moved by foot, truck and helicopter. Wherever the band performs, the audience reaction is enthusiastic. For the younger set, jazz singer Willie Stevens, a Seabee stationed in Danang, entertains with such songs as "Johnny Be Good" and "What I Say." Stevens, a three-time winner of the Annual Inter-Service Talent Contest, has appeared on the Ed Sullivan and Arthur Godfrey shows. Rock 'n Roll has its partisans, and here a group of Marines from the Danang area called "The Hustlers" entertain the audience with a few "jumpy" numbers. Proof of the audience appreciation is the standing ovation for the band and singers at the end of the performance. Sequences show: (a) Band arriving at ship, unloading from landing craft (b) Band playing for patients (c) Drum section solo (a) Audience reaction (e) Stevens performing (f) "The Hustlers" performing (g) Audience applauding NOTE TO EDITORS: 50' 16mm color master released to UPI-Newsfilm for servicing TV and theatrical pool members.
