OF NEWSFILM RELEASE OFFICE OF ASSISTANT SECRETARY OF DEFENSE (PUBLIC AFFAIRS) NITED AMERICA WASHINGTON, D.C. - 20301 STATES OF PLEASE NOTE DATE January 24, 1968 IMMEDIATE RELEASE Footage: 74' Time: 2:04 OXford 7-5111 Number: V-26-68 16mm color composite print Room 2E 771 U.S.Army's 11th Brigade Goes to Realistic Vietcong Booby Trap School in South Vietnam (Official Department of Defense motion picture film by the U.S. Air Force under the direction of the MACV Office of Information.) The deadly cunning of the Vietcong is vividly shown to members of the U.S.Army's 11th Brigade as they attend a special booby trap school in the abandoned hamlet of Thanh Hieu, South Vietnam. In this former Vietcong fortified village American, Australian, and South Vietnamese instructors teach the men the best techniques in searching a captured village, and how to stay alive in the process. The Army troops go through 11 different stations which demonstrate such Vietcong de- vices as the hidden crossbow, concealed anti-personnel mines, razor-sharp poisoned punji pits, a crude but deadly bamboo whip spear, and an overhead bamboo mace. Other aspects of the training include hiding methods by which the Vietcong remain in a captured village, the VC tactics of using women and children against an occupying force and some unusual places the enemy conceals his weapons. At the end of the course the troops are given an opportunity to talk with three Hoi Chanhs, former Viet- cong themselves, about what to expect from the enemy today. The unit receiving this training was "D" (Delta) Company, 4th Battalion, 3rd Infantry of the 11th Light In- fantry Brigade, now serving in the I Corps Tactical Zone, South Vietnam.
