INTERNATIONAL OF OFFICER NEWSFILM RELEASE OFFICE OF ASSISTANT SECRETARY OF DEFENSE (PUBLIC AFFAIRS) UNITED STATES OF ANGELES WASHINGTON, D.C. - 20301 PLEASE NOTE DATE Number: V-291-69 September 24, 1969 OX 7-6161 Filmed: August 28, 1969 Footage 53' Time 1:28 Room 2E 773 16mm color composite print SOLDIER-DOG TEAMS SEEK OUT INFILTRATORS ALONG KOREAN DMZ (Official Department of Defense motion picture film by the U.S. Army under the direction of MACV Office of Information. Photography by SP4 Lucas. Sound by SP5 Lowe) The U.S. Second Infantry Division, stationed along the demilitarized zone in Korea, has developed small, highly-trained units of men and dogs to aid in halting North Korean infiltrators across the zone. At Camp Sitman, located about 30 miles north of Seoul, South Korea, periodic patrols are conducted to maintain the proficiency of the Combat Tracker Teams, composed of six men and two dogs. The bloodhound is used initially on a patrol because of its keener sense of smell but as the trail becomes more refined, a German shepherd scout dog takes over. This dog follows the il until visual contact is made. In this training exercise, South Korean soldiers and ached to the U.S. Second Division act as the enemy infiltrator force. If the enemy force is small enough, the tracker team engages the enemy directly. Otherwise, teams contact their infantry back-up by radio for reinforcements. Such combat tracker teams have operated along the Korean DMZ for eight months. On one patrol, a team located a sizeable weapons cache which included the first Russian-made B-40 rockets to be found in Korea.
