Photography by SFC Cauchi and SP5 Henke. Sound by SP4 Ogozelec.) Perhaps one of the nicest things about Christmas is the music -- the sound of Christmas with its many beautiful carols and popular songs. To a combat soldier, it's one of the things he misses most -- and one of the things the armed forces tries to provide. The men of the Army's 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), manning scores of small but vital Fire Support Bases, will have their music supplied "live" this Christmas from their own "Skytrooper" Combat Band. The 30-piece band makes its rounds of Forward Bases throughout the year, but at the holiday season the concerts become more frequent and longer. They use a giant CH-46 "Chinook" helicopter to get in and out of these small bases, and in fact the band numbers 30 players because that's how many passengers a Chinook" helicopter can carry. The "Skytroopers" always open and close their show with the traditional Cavalry "Garry Owen", theme song of the 1st Cavalry Division.
