S. Air Force footage released by Department of Defense) The U. S. Air Force POL (Petroleum, 011, Lubricants) squadron at Danang Air Base, Republic of Vietnan, has many hardships to endure in the course of accomplishing its mission, keeping a steady flow of petroleum products available for various aircraft operating from the air base. Permanent pipelines to the air base from the commercial storage tanks located in the town of Danang are limited in capacity. Thus, pipe must be laid by hand through rice paddies, swamps, small streams, and along roads, the complete five miles from the town to the base. Constant inspection of the pipeline is necessary to insure it is not cut or damaged by the Viet Cong. The bulk of the fuel is purchased from commercial company storage tanks at Danang. Used on occasion is e. pipeline running from Red Beach, maintained by the U. S. Marine Corps. Prior to pumping the fuel to the base, it is tested to determine if it meets Air Force standards Once the fuel has been approved, it is pumped the five miles to the base storage area where it is stored in steel storage tanks, and in large plastic bags which expand as the fuel is added. The refueling trucks obtain the fuel from the storage area for final delivery to the various aircraft.
