Photography by SSgt Bloom, SSgt White, and SSgt Layman. Sound by SSgt Marrufo.) A big boost for troop morale in Vietnam is the rest and recreation center located at the Tay Ninh base camp some 50 miles northwest of Saigon. Called the Tay Ninh "Holiday Inn", after the well-known motel chain, the center provides a needed break for troops of the U.S. Army's 1st Brigade, 25th Infantry Division, which patrols the area within a several mile radius around the camp. The center has been operating for the past 16 months and gives men of the "Tropic Lightning" Division three days of relative comfort every 60 or 70 days spent in action. Nine barrack-type huts house 14 men each, but the troops spend much of their time in the 50 by 100 foot field swimming pool. There's o a television room, barber shop and plenty of hot showers and sporting equipment. As many as 250 soldiers use the center every week, with each unit bringing its own food and often grilling it on the open barbecue pits. The three-day stay provides relaxation and a chance to write home.
