CARD INDEX DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE OFFICE OF PUBLIC INFORMATION THE PENTAGON, WASHINGTON 25 D.C. - LIBERTY 5-6700 (A) RADIO - TV BRANCH, TELEVISION SECTION Release No. 71-57 PICTORIAL BRANCH, NEWSREEL SECTION ROOM 2E-791 EXT. 72902 75061 Footage: 300 g ROOM 2D-780A EXT. 75111 For release 14 May 1957 DUPE NEGATIVE TO: MGM NBC-TV FINE GRAIN TO: IRRADIATED FOOD LUNCHEON (Official Army footage released by Dept. of Defense ) Secretary of the Army Wilbur M. Brucker holds a luncheon at the Pentagon for a taste experiment of irradiated foods. Peaches, bacon, ground beef (made like Swedish meatballs), coffee cake frankfurters, tuna, carrots and orange slices are eaten. The Quartermaster General is directing a vast Army research program, launched in 1953, to develop irradiation as a new process in food preservation. The Army program is being conducted in cooperation with the Atomic Energy Commission, the Food and Drug Administration, the Department of Agriculture and other Govern- ment agencies as well as industrial and educational institutions throughout the country. Although it is still in the laboratory stage, it is about to move into the pilot plant phase. Eventually it is anticipated, it will become a major commercial food preserva- tion process. The new process is somewhat comparable to the taking of am X-Ray. Packaged food is exposed to what is called ionizing radiations. The usual type of radiations used are either electrons or gamma rays. Electrons are usually produced by wan-made machines, while gamna rays are usually produced by fission products from an atomic reactor. It is gratifying to note that the program of the irradiation preservation of food is also contributing to President Eisenhover "Atoms for Peace program. Sequences show: (e) Various shots of irradiated foods set out on table. (0) Various shots of Sec. Brucker's table. (c) Various shots around room and of head table.
