SCOPE: This coverage is of a U.S. Navy Tomahawk Cruise Missile successfully demon- strating its long-range, over-the-horizon capability to search for and locate a target at sea. BACKGROUND: Following launch from the wing of an A-6 Intruder aircraft flying west of Monterey, California, the Tomahawk Cruise Missile made a 188 mile, low-level flight south to the Pacific Missile Test Center's Sea Test Range to find its target. The Tomahawk flown was equipped for the first time with an anti-ship missile guidance set with an active radar seeker. After locating the target, Tomahawk flew over the target ship (the surplus World War II destroyer XUSS Blue -- XUSS is the designation for ships that have to be towed) at low level to simulate a ship attack mission. Following the 55 minute test, the missile's recovery system was activated and the missile was recovered from the ocean surface for further use in the Tomahawk flight test program. Total Tomahawk flight time amassed during 14 flights this year now stands at 12 hours and 54 minutes. General Dynamics' Convair Division in San Diego, California, is developing the Tomahawk Cruise Missile for the U.S. Navy.
