Description

Reel 1 (6 min.) shows gasoline supplies, an electric generator, supply tunnels, and office accommodations at an Antarctic base. Reel 2 (12 min.) shows radio, machine shop, carpentry, and tailoring facilities aboard the North Star. Men are initiated as the ship crosses the Equator. Reel 3 (12 min.), weather balloons are hoisted, tunnels dug in the snow, and communication lines strung in a camp. Shows the U.S.S. Bear. Reel 4 (11 min.), a snow barricade is constructed around a Condor seaplane. Supplies are brought to camp by tractor and dog sled. Snow is cleared from the camp area by a snowplow. Reel 5 (12 min,) shows a flag lowering ceremony, machine shop activity, a snowmobile, and supplies cached at a camp. Reel 6 (12 min.), a snow wall is built around a Condor seaplane. Dogs and men walk through a tunnel. Men pull a sled laden with supplies. Reel 7 (12 min.), a wooden floor and roof are added to a main camp building. Reel 8 (6 min.), tarpaulin is spread completely over the building. Reel 9 (5 min.) shows a discussion of a navigation problem, and radio equipment at a base. Reel 10 (11 min.) shows general views of a camp in a blizzard. Men dig and chop through snow to get supplies. The Bear lies at anchor. Sled dogs play and penguins run in the snow. Reel 11 (13 min.), tractors and dog teams bring supplies to a camp. Stores are unloaded. Men look for supplies in a storehouse tunnel. Reel 12 (12 min.), a Barkley-Grow seaplane is repaired and fueled. Dog sleds and tractors arrive at camp with supplies. The roof of a camp building is repaired. Shows general views of camp. Reel 13 (8 min.), blankets are removed, and a Condor seaplane is warmed up and taxied. Snow is removed around a tractor garage. A tractor pulls a Barkley-Grow seaplane. Reel 14 (11 min.), a Condor seaplane taxis and takes off. A building is erected of snow blocks. Supplies are stacked in a tunnel storehouse. Reel 15 (12 min.), men are initiated as the North Starcrosses the Equator. A sick dog is fed. A sled is repaired. Reel 16 (9 min.), a camp flag is raised. A man on skis guides a dog teams. Stores are unloaded, a tent erected, and a sled made. Reel 17 (6 min.), a radio man receives and, records messages. Shows scientific laboratory equipment. Reel 18 (11 min.), tractors and dog teams pull stores. A Barkley-Grow seaplane, frozen in ice, is dug out and tugged loose. Reel 19 (13 min.), supplies are unloaded from the Bear and the North Star by derrick and carried away by dog sled. A sled is constructed. Reel 20 (10 min.), a building foundation is dug in ice, snow block walls erected, and a wooden roof added. Stores are covered with a tarpaulin, a weather balloon raised, and a snow tunnel dug. Reel 21 (11min.), supplies are unloaded from a Condor seaplane and pulled away by dog sled and tractor. Shows aerial views of snow wastes. Reel 22 (12 min.), camp buildings are buried under snow. A tractor-powered snowplow clears a path. Snow is dug from around a building. A tractor is repaired. Reel 23 (9 min.), tractors and dog sleds pull supplies to the North Star. A tractor tows a small cabin. Reel 24 (10 min.), dogs are harnessed to a sled. A blizzard rages over the campsite. Penguins are captured and fed. Supplies are loaded on the North Star at Boston. Reel 25 (11 min.), a dog team pulls a sled. The Bear is winched toward the shore and anchored in the ice. A Barkley-Grow seaplane taxies to the ship and is lashed to it. A structure is made of snow. Reel 26 (12 min.), a building foundation is marked in ice and floor planks laid. Tractors tow supplies. Reel 27 (12 min.), a Condor seaplane is warmed up and snow shoveled from around it. Dogs huddle in doghouses during a blizzard. Tunnels are dug in the snow. Reel 28 (12 min.) a snowplow clears a path around a building. A tractor tread is repaired. Snow blocks are sawed.
