Science and Techniques #80 Part 3

Description

SUMMARY: I. The manufacture of a new type of glass. After it has been cooled, this glass, which is 80% air, can be cut with a knife. It also floats in water. Cold is unable to penetrate it so the glass is used for insulation of buildings. A scientist shows how it is cut into bricks. II. Explanation of a new machine to manufacture lace. Close-ups and diagrams show the mechanism in action. Different combinations and movements of the knives and threads make different designs and knots. 75 meters of lace can be turned out in a day. III. Excavations in Georgia. There are views of Mtchet, an ancient town, located in mountainous country. A member of the Academy of Science shows ruins of the old city to a group of students. Women take part in the excavation. An old cemetery yields bones of people who lived 3000 years ago. Also found are pottery, knives, small statues, jewelry and other objects which tell the story of the Georgian people. IV. Katusha. An old toy using the rocket propulsion principle is seen in motion. The rocket principle is explained by a diagram. Then modern rocket launchers ("Katushas") are mounted on trucks and fire ammunition.
