UN ECO 380 FOOTAGE CAMERA SUBJECT: NAA SUBMITTAL No. 90 (SID 62-367-90) TESTS OF APOLLO START ANGLE HEAT SHIELD SPECIMENS Covers a series of tests of Apollo Heat Shield specimens in 10 Megawatt plasma generator facility. Specific object of these tests was to determine the effects of metal protrusions on heat shield materials in a turbulent regime. Test specimens are shaped in the form of hollow cylinders thru which the high-velocity gases heated by the plasma generator are expelled. Frictional resistance between the walls of the cylinder and the flowing gas sets up turbulence in the flow similar to that which occurs under actual flight conditions and produces comparable high-intensity heating. First test was conducted to evaluate variation of the reference design heat shield material. Next three were measuring ablation performance and rear surface heating effects of the tension tie bolts; last test evaluated the interface between the fiberglass shear pads and the heat shield material. 10 LS Technician installing turbulent pipe sample No. AP-1349-2 over nozzle of 10 megawatt plasma generator. 30 MCU Sample retainer and control nozzle being installed. 55 MS Technician installing water-cooled control nozzle over open end of sample. This sample was prepared with eight stainless-steel pins, two each 1/8", 1/4", 3/8", and 1/2" in diameter, inserted thru the walls of the cylinder and set flush with both the ID and OD. (More in report) 249 MCU Sample No. AP-764 being removed. Test run of this sample was identical to that of sample No. AP-763, except that the pins extend- ed 1/2" beyond the ID. (More in report) 267 CU Sample retainer and control nozzle being installed for test of sample No. AP-765. As a potential method for controlling erosion around the bolts, sample No. AP-765 was fitted with four stainless steel pins surrounded by bushings of materials known to have a higher ablation temperature than the reference material. 275 MS Plasma jet during test run of sample No.AP-765. 319 MS Technician protected against noxious fumes while removing sample No.AP-765 from plasma generator.
