Description

FR A234 SKYLAB 4 KINESCOPE TAPE 13, PART 2 of 3 Okay, we're right over Japan and looking across the way here to Korea, looking now at South Korea, up to the north, panning up the east coast of Korea. Not gonna' be able to get positioned is what I'm afraid oh, here we go. Well, if we ever get organized here. Okay, we're looking straight down on Japan down here now, and the smoke in the lower part of the frame is actually smoke from a volcano - Sucarezema - Sucoorazema. Pan up the island of Kiyusu here. Think you can probably see the break between the island of Kiyusu and Onchuu here, picking up quite a few clouds now, and I am going to try to stay on the east coast of Japan. Doesn't look too good. Quite a few clouds. Actually some snow on the ground, but I'm not sure you will be able to see it on the monitor - TV monitor. Doesn't look too good there. Okay, what does it look like up on the coast of China there. Are we out too far, I think it's probably worth a quick look. Change my organization here okay, now looking back on Korea and you'll see a lot of smoke hanging over Korea, just about the area of North Korea and South Korea, and then we can actually look up to the North toward China and Russia, and we will do one pan here and call it quits because it doesn't look too good and can't quite see it but I can see just about center frame there. Okay, it's all up. Ed, would you turn it off, please? Looks reasonable, I don't know, we'll just describe it and see how it works out. What we're looking at here, we're about the 50th parallel - we're moving eastward, ALEUTOIN and I'm trying to put into center frame a line here right along the Illutian Chain more or less exhibited by an arc which goes right up to the center of the frame, and the Illution Islands end up in an Alaskan peninsula and go right up into Alaska proper - we've noticed over about the last three or four days the rather startling effect the very small islands of the Illutian chains do have on the weather, and you'll notice here that there's a big difference in the clouds - cloud coverage from left frame to right frame - yeah - okay, now we're going to try to show you the Illutian Chain here. See the pointer moving along the Illutian Chain -now we'll point to the individual islands which may be difficult to distinguish from the clouds, and these - most of them - are a lot of them have almost perfect volcanic cones and sometimes they stick up through the clouds and more or less look like inverted ice cream cones right through the tops of the clouds with solid cloud cover. #A234 Page 2 Can I take a closer look at some of the islands, - and you'll see the islands are not completely snow-covered, but of course, the mountain tops and most of the slopes are snow-covered, and we're looking right up into the Alaskan penissula now. Now I'll pan up and in the top of the screen is the Alaskan peninsula, and Kodiak Island is not quite visible. It will be up toward the end of this chain, off to the right, and that's correct right along in there is Kodiak Island
