FR #A239 SKYLAB 4 KINESCOPE TAPE 15, PART 1 of 3 - Got the whole Gulf of California there across the way is Guadalajara Gonna' give it another go at putting a bubble of air inside our bubble of water and see what affect this has on the oscillations. Okay, we've got our- selves a bubble, now the trick is to get the oscillation without breaking the bubble. And I think we'll let her rotate around there a little bit, keeping the bubble in the center now, the effects were rather undramatic, except they tell the (garble) - the bubble did not oscillate, the sphere did not oscillate anywhere near to the degree that it did before. It received the same forces initially, however, it damped very quickly. The effect then of the gas inside which is compressible is to damp the oscillations much faster. I'll try it again, if I can do it without breaking the gas bubble. Okay, they were not really completely regular oscillations, but they do demonstrate the effects pretty well. This hazy looking sphere that you see is composed of water and soap. Very small part of soap - maybe only 1% or so is actual soap solution. Other than making it cloudy, it also takes and changes the surface tension, and the result of it is the decrease of the surface tension so that if the sphere here is going to act like a spring, it oscillates, we should expect it to oscillate a little bit slower. This reduced surface tension also makes it a lot harder to work with. So let's give it a try. I think you can see these plungers that I have on the side. These are ( cut off) and I can give you the size later, and that will allow you to get a reference for the size of the bubble we're actually working with with the same size bubble, that oscillates a little bit slower, and to me, it seems to damp quicker, along with the reduced spring force. Okay, now, we'll move on to collisions, - between two spheres, fairly slow collisions, and rapid collisions. I think we'll get a little more dynamic now - now we're gonna' look at the coálescene of two bubbles, both the same size, see the red one in front of you, and we're gonna' have our impacter come in from your left hand side, and I'm just maneuvering him in now, he'll be the same size, they're both around 30cc's. Nope, got too high of an angle okay, we had a pretty big impact parameter here, if you will, which is the distance between the line of centers essentially but we'll try that one again. I mean we can get you a better one than that. Probably what we're going to do is across the floor here Page 2 A239 give you a fair range of different impact parameters just by the sheer odds of trying to line them up straight and not be able to do it completely. All right, we're set up for another look at drop coalescence. This might help in understanding such things as buildup of raindrops, how (garble) okay now, we're going to bring our impacters again and have 'em hit the impactee. He' be coming from your lefthand side. He's going to live leave our screens, so why don't I try to move "em back here a little bit pardon my hand if I can keep 'em in view here I think you can probably get some good information on mixing there as well as damping rates of the oscillations you notice there's been very little mixing right back home to roost. What we ought to do while we have our friend here is to try another impact on him, only we'll try it now on a relative smaller globule - we'll use some dark fluid - and we'll have a higher velocity. The fluid you'll see enter- ing from the left will not be a perfect sphere - it will be one in oscillation - irregular sphere - or irregular shape - okay, comin' now. Aahhh, we missed. Standby okay, here he comes now we'll try a smaller one yet, and see if we can get a little higher velocity. Well, we got the higher velocity unfor- tunately. The aim was just give us another 85 days and I'm sure I can get this one down okay, let's try her again. come on, old buddy come on, friend, get back there this fellow's got a lot of inertia okay, he's maneuvering his way back here you notice in the rotation here, you have a few bubbles and they have managed to move themselves to the center of rotation. Now our friend may hook onto string got too much mass and too much inertia to help him out here okay we 11 try one more impact (garble) we did it anyway Well, let's close out this series of impact and try one more, and I think that ought to do it for impacts. This time will try a little clear fluid and see if we can't get a more straight-on shot here here comes a slow one I think that will take care of impacts. Let's - next thing we'll look at, which will be a little more difficult yet, is the rotations. That effect (tape ended)
