How Will We Know It's Us? Part 4

Description

This film underscores the importance of preserving and restoring America's historic buildings, and discusses the revitalization of select neighborhoods in cities in which early American architecture was prominent, such as College Hill in Providence, Rhode Island and Worcester Square in New Haven, Connecticut. Conservation efforts in San Francisco and Monterey, California and Galena, Illinois are also shown. The title of the film comes from a quote by John Steinbeck, in which he says, "How will we know it's us without our past?" Local initiatives, very early in architectural restoration planning processes, are essential, and general, broad-scale plans must be developed early so as to ensure that new construction remains in harmony with the old. The film was directed by Lawrence Ravitz and produced by the National Trust for Historic Preservation in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
