Description

This film documents the settlement of the American West in the latter half of the 19th century. The film depicts the colonization and eventual urbanization of the West; describes the effect that westward expansion had on Native Americans; shows where the westward migration began (on the river towns of the Missouri River) and where it ended (at the gold fields of California, 2,500 miles away); and pictures gold and silver miners, cowboys, immigrants, railroad builders, famous outlaws and sheriffs, camp followers, and ordinary citizens looking for a new life.
