American Folk Music Part 1
Description
This video includes four separate programs. The first production, "All Hand Work," a WWVU-TV production directed by Carl Fleischhauer, provides a portrait of Jenes Cottrell, a 73-year-old wood craftsman from Clay County, West Virginia. Cottrell is shown at his home and on his farm during a visit from West Virginia University folklore professor Patrick Gainer on August 13, 1970, talking and playing the banjo. The second production, "Buck Dancer," directed by Bess Lomax Hawes, centers on Ed Young, a performer from Memphis, Tennessee who was raised in Mississippi. The third production, "The Georgia Sea Island Singers," directed by Bess Lomax Hawes, features performances of spirituals by performers John Davis, Emma Ramsay, Henry Morrison, Mabel Hillary, and Bessie Jones. The fourth production, "Say Old Man - Can You Play the Fiddle?," directed by Bess Lomax Hawes and Barbara Lapan Rahm, features fiddler Earl Collins performing with his son, Richard, at his home in Downey, California.
