Description

This film explores United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration (UNRRA) aid to Greece after World War II. Reel 1 traces Greek heritage from the ancient past, with scenes of Athens and the Acropolis. As World War II has scarred the countryside and its population, the UNRRA sends field workers to destitute villages to assess need. In Reel 2, members of the United Nations donate food, clothing, and medicine, and the Greeks begin to rebuild their communities. The film also explains that rising inflation and leftist ideology threatens political stability. In Reel 3, Britain sends troops to Greece to quell political strife as rehabilitation efforts continue. The disabled are treated, farms are plowed, harbors are cleared of debris, and the shipping industry is rebuilt as UNRRA improves transportation. The film was presented by the National Film Board of Canada in Cooperation with the UNRRA; directed by Nicholas Read; and narrated by Budd Knapp, with commentary by Rita Greer.
