Czechoslovakia 1968 Part 4
Description
Without narration, this film uses footage and photos with dramatic newsreel-style editing to cover the span of Czech history from the nation's founding in 1918 to the invasion of the Soviets on August 20, 1968. The tanks of the Red Army were welcomed in Prague as liberators in May 1945, but, when they returned in 1968 to reassert Soviet rule and dominance, they were less than welcome and were met with force and resistance by the Czech people — a period known as the "Prague Spring." Equating Nazism with communism, the film attempts to reveal the brutal nature of Soviet rule. The film was produced and directed by Denis Sanders and Robert M. Fresco and won the 1970 Academy Award for Best Documentary Short Subject.
