European Labor Day - 1951 Part 3
Description
This film is a roundup of the 1951 May Day celebrations, contrasting the celebrations in Western Europe - run by the free trade unions - with the militarized celebration in Moscow, where no free trade unions are allowed. Included are the Norway rally (protesting the jailing of a woman labor leader in Hungary), the parade in Denmark, and Maypole dances in the Netherlands. Hundreds of thousands of well-organized workers celebrate in West Germany, while in West Berlin a half million hear, among others, the American CIO representative in Europe, Victor Reuther. Theodore Koerner, president of the Austrian union, addresses a rally in Vienna's Ringstrasse. In Italy, CISL President Pastore challenges the Communist-led unions of the nation. A Marshall Plan film, produced by the ECA Film Section, Paris, for ECA.
