Strength for the Free World: The Council of Europe (Version I) - 1958 Reel 1 · Part 2
Description
This film examines the Council of Europe in Strasburg, France - what it is, what it does, and how it works - as seen through the eyes of its staff of simultaneous interpreters. Belgium's Paul-Henri Spaak, France's Paul Reynaud, Germany's Heinrich von Brentano, and Britain's Robert Boothby all speak during a session on European unity. Robert Schuman (France), Premier Alcide De Gasperi (Italy), and Chancellor Konrad Adenauer (Germany) solemnly declare their intention to form the European Coal and Steel Community (Paul-Henri Spaak of Belgium is seen but not heard). This informative look at the Council of Europe in its early days - when it had only advisory functions - takes on historic significance as the continent moves towards forming the European Parliament. A Marshall Plan Film, produced by MSA Film Section, Paris, for MSA, and narrated by Gene Kelly.
