Kleine Stadt - Grosses Leben: Helmstedt Reel 1 · Part 1
Description
A documentary examining the city of Helmstedt, a frontier post between East and West Germany during the Allied occupation after World War II. Reel 1 shows refugees as they are inspected and recorded at the border train station, and includes scenes of black market purchases and currency exchanges. The train station mission provides food and shelter for travelers and refugees, and trains and trucks transport coal and fuel to Berlin. Reel 2 depicts trucks with supplies that are forced to wait at the toll point. Russian soldiers try to prevent East Germans from escaping across the border; some do escape, while others are forced back. Included are scenes of President Truman and Joseph Stalin, as well as an explanation that borders alone cannot stop ideologies. Produced by Sud-West Film.
