Description

This film tells the story of native Alaskans in three distinct parts. Part I ("Reflections") traces the history of the three main native people of Alaska: the Eskimo, the Aleut, and the Indian. Family and tribal communities, hunting and fishing activities, religious beliefs, and traditions that remained virtually unchanged for 3,000 years until the arrival of fur traders and miners are all described. Part II ("Realities") describes the difficulties that Alaskan natives face in becoming a part of modern life. The film contrasts their easy-going subsistence mode of living with the present economic system and urban hustle. Part III ("Prospects") explores native Alaskans' hopes for a bright future brought about through their own efforts. The film discusses possible sources of income, such as tourism, handicrafts, fish, and lumber. Also examined is the work of the Alaska Federation of Natives, which strives for the fair settlement of native land claims. The film was presented by CBS News, executive produced by Pamela Ilott, produced by Chalmers Dale, and narrated by Philip Bosco.
