Local 100 Part 3
Description
This film covers the formation of Local 100, an affiliate of a national trade union in Canada, and shows the development and benefits of trade unionism in a small factory while also examining the responsibilities of a trade union in a democratic society. Reel 1 depicts poor working conditions and job insecurity, which provoke factory workers to organize a union. In Reel 2, a union organizer meets with the workers, and a recruiting drive and organizational meeting are held, after which a constitution is drafted. The union then obtains certification as a legal bargaining group and begins negotiations. Reel 3 shows how the negotiations prove fruitful and a contract is approved by the union, demonstrating that labor and management can work together to realize mutual goals. This is a Marshall Plan film, written and directed by Bernard Devlin, sponsored by MSA/SRE, presented by the National Film Board of Canada, and produced by James Beveridge in consultation with the Federal Department of Labor, Ottawa, Canada.
