The Oil Kingdoms Reel 3 · Part 13
Description
The original agency catalog description reads: Audience: Navy Personnel With Orders to the Persian Gulf Area (To Include Ships Deployed To That Area), All Ratings. Synopsis: Episode I (Kings and Pirates) presents an historical account of the Persian Gulf region. The slave and pearl markets, tribalism, and piracy are discussed in interesting detail. Influences on the cultural evolution of oil kingdoms were the flourishing trade with Europe which brought great wealth and conquerers to the Persian Gulf area; first the Portuguese then the British. Natural pearls attracted many people to that area until the Japanese developed the cultured pearl industry. When the Suez Canal was completed it destroyed the area's economy; the people lived in great poverty until the discovery of oil. Episode II (The Petrodollar Coast) describes the effect of the oil boom on the Persian Gulf. The area is analyzed from social, political, and financial perspectives: old meeting new. Episode III (A Sea of Conflict) takes a close look at the economic, social, and political situations today. Fundamentalists from Iran, communists from the Soviet Union, and expansionists from Israel keep the gulf region looking over its shoulder. Potential and real conflicts are considered in this segment. Purpose: To develop viewer's historical, cultural, financial, and political understanding of Persian Gulf countries -- Oman, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and Gatar. The Saudi naval expansion program, pre-briefing indoctrination Courses, GMT Course (shipboard).
