Japanese OIL PLANTS AND STORAGE Part 1
Description
LS Looking N at a destroyed boiler house which is located N of the topping plant. (Section I). LS Looking NE showing a direct hit on a boiler in the blast by 500 lb GP bomb fused .1 nose and .1 tail delay. The structure that aroused this boiler plant was razed by fire. LS Looking SE showing the polymerization units, and polymerization unit under construction both of which were structurally damaged as a result of direct hits and near misses by 500 lb GP bomb fused .1 nose and .1 tail delay. (Section R). LS Looking SE showing a direct hit on the NW corner of the polymerization plant which was under construction. LS Looking S at the roof and N side dewaxing plant showing the structural failure resulting from two direct hits by 500 lb GP bomb fused .1 nose and .1 tail delay. LS Showing the effect of a direct hit on one of two tanks on top of a single story reinforced concrete structure located between the first and second topping plant. LS Looking E at a boiler house N of the emulsion building showing the effect on a heavy reinforced concrete revetment of two near misses with a 500 lb GP bomb fused .1 nose and ,1 tail delay. MCU Looking at S side of the stack adjacent to the boiler house whose base although included within the crater area remained unaffected. The factor is sand soil. LS A gas holder located S of tank area adjacent to the hydrogenation plant showing the super structure of the holder which activated the fuse of a 500 lb GP bomb fused .1 nose and .1 tail delay resulting in an air burst. MS Long tilt shot looking E showing an intact distillation tower in the methane cracking plant. (Section K). LS Looking NE showing the effect of two direct hits on a two-story reinforced concrete structure and a single story structure located N of the methane plant. (Section J). LS Looking NE from the Vacuum Distillation Plant showing the W side of the Du-Sol Solvent Refining Building which received two direct hits and was affected by near miss. In the background, a destroyed topping tower. (Section L). LS Looking NE showing the SW corner of the Bari-Sol Dewaxing Plant which received four direct hits with a 500 lb GP bomb fused .1 nose and .1 tail delay. In the foreground is an area in which practically every storage and processing tank was damaged by blast and fragmentation and secondary fire. (Section L). MS Long pan shot from E to N across the refining area showing the Bari-Sol Dewaxing Plant, the Polymerization Unit and the Catalytic Cracking Plant. (Section L - R). MLS Looking SW from the Du-Sol Solvent Plant showing a large tank which has been undermined by the cratering effect of the near miss but shows little fragmentation damage. (Section L). MCU Looking W showing the type of revetment which was intended to protect the tanks on the E side of the Du-Sol Solvent Plant. LS Showing disrupted pipelines S of the Su-Sol Solvent Refinery as a result of a neat miss by a 500 lb GP bomb fused .1 nose and .1 tail delay. MLS Tank. MLS Pre-heating furnace showing the design and type of construction, as well as damage inflicted on the S half by a 500 lb GP bomb fused .1 nose and .1 tail delay. (Section Z). MLS S half of pre-heating unit showing effect of a direct hit by a 500 lb GP bomb fused .1 nose and .1 tail delay. (Section Z). MS Showing complete structural failure of the pre-heating furnace. (Section Z). MLS Pan R to L looking N at a stack, which as a result of a direct hit from a 500 lb GP bomb fused .1 nose and .1 tail delay, collapsed on a one story reinforced concrete structure. This stack is located in the vacuum plant which is situated on the NE section of the plant on the S side of the road leading from main power plant. (Section X). MS Showing the base of the stack engulfed in a crater. MLS Pan L to R showing the S and W faces of the polymerization plant and the collapsed tanks to the S of it. The reinforced polymerization building was hit by two 500 lb GP bombs fused .1 nose and .1 tail delay. (Section X). LS S face of a wax cracking plant which was seriously affected by secondary fire. MS Looking N showing the interior of the second floor of the polymerization plant. This view shows the structural failure of reinforced concrete as result of detonation of 500 lb GP bomb fused .1 nose and .1 tail delay within the structure. In the background are destroyed control panels. (Section S). LS S side of Catalytic Cracking Plant showing effect of bombardment with 500 lb GP bomb fused .1 nose and .1 tail delay and secondary fire. MS Showing two condensers which were damaged by fragmentation and slightly affected by blast. MS Of a direct hit with a 500 lb GP bomb which destroyed two condensers. MS A portion of northernmost condenser and the adjacent cylindrical tower affected by fire. (Section R). MLS Pre-heating furnace of topping plant which received a direct hit from a 500 lb GP bomb fused .1 nose and .1 tail delay and was completely destroyed. (Section I). LS Looking E at the W face of the main power plant showing tremendous areas of superficial damage consisting largely of roof and sides of the building as well as a direct hit from a 500 lb GP bomb fused .1 nose and .1 tail delay on the upper portion of the NW corner at the point where the coal conveyor which serves the entire plant enters the building. (Section F). LS Looking almost E taken from ground level along E to W. Street on which the main power house is located. In the background are two topping plants which were superficially damaged and further E along the street is the heart of the Otake Oil Refinery. (Section I, L, Q, and R). CU MS Of the top of the iso-octane storage tank showing the manner in which the tank failed as a result of increasing the pressure within the tank. MLS Showing the effect of direct hit on a single-story reinforced concrete structure. This is the direct hit.
