Cylindrical column located northern roof wall of the Communications Hospital building shows flash burn shadow detail. MS Flash burn shadow cast by a bolt on the west side of a desulfurization tank located on the western side of Gas tank. The bolt is moved upwards to show shadow cast on side of tank. Located approx. 6555 feet from zero at 153 degrees. MCU Same location; portion of a block and tackle used to lift the top of desulfurization tank. View shows cogs of the wheel, a true shadow of the cogs, also shows the flash-burn shadow. MS Same location as above. Iron ladder leaning against a boiler shows shadow cast by the sun. MS Iron ladder shown above is now removed by a Japanese workman in order to reveal shadow detail caused by flash burn. Several angles were taken in order ti show clearly the difference between Atomic shadow and Sun shadow. MS MC Shut off valve wheel shadow cast on side of tank. MS Pan NW side of gas holder shows flash burn. MS Shadow cast on tank by "V" shaped steel members which served as braces (This is Gas Holder No. 1, westernmost tank in Gas Works). MS Showing shadow cast on the side of the tank by rivet heads which protruded above the circle. MS Showing the W side of a tower on which a flash burn shadow of a steel ladder is clearly visible. CU Same shadow in above scene. This ladder is located at the SW end of desulfurization tank. MS Flash burn shadow on side of two cylindrical columns located just S side of desulfurization tank. CU Pan down , same as above. MS Shadow cast on the side of gas holder by bamboo ladder which was leaning against the tank at the time of detonation of the bomb. The detail of the shadow is exceptionally clear and reveals that the third rung from the top of the ladder was broken. The N shadow was cast by the upper section of the ladder. Much of lower section of the ladder and tank were not exposed by flash since they were hidden by adjacent building. MS Showing the shadow cast on the side of gas holder by the upper portion of bamboo ladder. The flash burned areas are shining bright and the shadow areas are dull black. CU Section of the flash burned areas contrasting the areas exposed with those which were protected from the flash. MS Pan down from the top of the steel, vertical column adjacent to the flash burned shadow of the bamboo ladder. This view was taken with the axis of the camera pointing to zero and shows the direction in which the rays hit the side of the tank. MS another angle showing the shadow cast by vertical, steel column on the side of the gas holder. LS Looking E at the W side of tank 2 showing flash burned areas as well as the shadow cast by bamboo ladder, vertical steel column and angular roofs of buildings which protected the lower portions of gas holder from flash (underexposed). MS Showing the shadow cast on the W side of the #1 gas holder by the circular steel stairway adjacent to it. MS Circular steel column around circular stairway. Shows the side which was exposed to flash burn and unexposed side. Also CU showing the side which was exposed to flash and unexposed side. LS Pan form L to R looking down from top of gas holder #2 showing the effect of blast which ruptured the top of gas holder and threw it out of line. This gas holder was apparently empty, or very nearly empty, at time of detonation. MS Showing a series of rivets on vertical column level with the top of catwalk on tank #2 as seen with the axis of the camera pointing zero. Reverse angle of rivet heads showing comparison of the areas effected by flash burn and those which were protected. MS Looking down at the ruptured dome of gas holder #1 which was very nearly empty at the time of detonation. MCU One of three columns on NW side of top of tank #1 showing the flash burn as well as the protected area. MCU 2nd column showing greater area exposed to flash burn than was seen on previous column. MCU 3rd column, a great portion of which was exposed to flash as result of its location and as was the case of other two columns. MS Vertical steel column which served as flange for the roller which permitted tank to rise vertically with increased internal gas pressure. The shadow of the roller indicates position of the tank at the time of detonation of the bomb (P). CU Shadow cast by the steel roller. MS Pan from the shadow of the roller to roller itself which was now approx. 2-1/2" lower than its' original position as the result of the collapse of the dome of the tank. CU W side of a railroad coach shows blistering effect caused by flash burn; car located in Marshaling Yard, Hiroshima. MCU Looking N showing the SE side of the storage tank which at the time of the detonation of the bomb was covered with a camouflage net which cast its' shadow on the flash burned area of the tank. A series of three CUs taken from the top of the storage tank showing rain water which has collected in a compressed section of the tank with flash burn and shadows cast by the camouflage netting surrounding it. MLS Looking N showing the SE side of two oil storage tanks which were superficially effected by blast and extensively flash burned. MC Pan along vertical pipe located on the S side of the southernmost of the two storage tanks. View with the axis of the lens pointing to zero. CU Pan same as above, showing the shadow cast on the flash burned surface of the tank by vertical pipe. The flash burned area is red. MCU Showing the SE side of the upper section of gas pump. A portable 100 gallon gasoline pump and storage tank, typical of those used in Orient for retailing gasoline, with one axis of the camera pointing toward zero. On the lower section of the frame can be seen a shadow cast by knob of a manual valve pump housing. In this case the flash burned area is black and the shadow is the original red color which the housing was painted. MCU A second shot shows the shadow cast on the flash burned area of the pump housing by the pump handle. A series of two shots showing first the shadow cast by the knob of a manual control valve on the pump housing and second by the knob and the handle. Showing a section of the pump rod which tapers out near the point at which it is affixed to pump, and the shadow which it cast on the pump housing. A series of two MCUs looking at the side of the pump housing showing the line of demarcation between the flash burned and the underexposed areas as well as the shadows which were cast on it. MLS Showing W and S sides of streetcar which was immobilized as result of blast. A series of two shots looking N showing flash burned areas and shadows on the frame of the operator's windows. (Yellow outdoor paint). MCU Mr. Dan Dyer moves panel to show flash burned window panel on the western side of car. LS Looking S-SE on the roof of building 32C on the northernmost corner of the Imperial University Complex, situated 4425 feet from zero at 166 degrees, showing the flash burned area of a wall of the stairway which has been flash burned. Clearly visible are the distinct shadows cast by the projecting overhang of the roof, the northern roof railing, the light globe and the window panel of the door. CU A series of two shots showing the shadow cast on the flash burned wall of the SE wing of building 32C. MCU The portion of the area shown above showing the flash burned and unaffected areas as well as the shadow cast by the sun at this time of day. Distinctly visible is significant shadow cast by the white glass globe of the outdoor fixture before it was shattered by blast. CU Showing the shadow cast by door on the wall as well as the flash burned areas caused by rays passing through the window panel of the door leaving a pinkish area on the otherwise unaffected area behind the door. Several extreme CU shots showing effect of flash burn on a red berry bush, located approx. 7275 feet from zero. MS Bamboo grove where group of trees were flash burned, located approx. 7400 feet from zero. MS A Japanese male is shown sitting on granite steps at the entrance to Sumitomo Bank which is located approx. 925 feet from zero at 106 degrees. This scene reconstructs as faithfully as possible, the position of an individual facing towards zero at 1:14 AM on the morning of August 6, 1945. Zoom down showing the shadow of the departed man's buttocks etched on the granite steps. It is interesting to note that his right ankle casts a shadow on the steps, but since his left foot was resting on the surface of the step no corresponding shadow was cast on perpendicular faces of the step. Zoom down shot looking E at the ornamental stone work on the S side of the entrance photographed to depict the direct travel of the rays emitted by the bomb and to illustrate the manner in which protruding position of the stone cast their shadows. Flash burned surfaces are light and the shadows are dark. LS Building 96, located approx. 375 feet from zero at 235 degrees, showing E face of two-story reinforced concrete building.
