OPERATION MUGU Part 1

Description

Summary: A series of air-to-air fire control tests at intercept conditions. F-94's, using the E-5 fire control system, fire at aerial tow target with radar reflector. (Shot list to follow.) 1) AMS F-94C in flight from L to R. 2) AMS showing canopy of F-94 and rockets firing from nose of aircraft. This scene shot from camera mounted in vertical stabilizer of the F-94 and shows a bank of twenty-four rockets being fired. 3) MS F-94C, with canopy raised, taxiing from R to L. 4) MCU man standing on horizontal stabilizer, preparing cameras in the vertical stabilizer for a flight. (These cameras were used to show aiming areas, so that ballistics data could be derived.) 5) MS technician loading the rocket launcher with 2.75 folding fin rockets. 6) LPS from L to R, B-45 aircraft taking off, tow target at rear of aircraft. 7) LPS F-94C taking off from L to R. 8) AMS B-45 in flight from L to R. 9) AMS from camera in vertical stabilizer of F-94, the F-94 in flight. 10) MS drawing of firing range and she flight path the F-94's and the B-45's will take. 11) CU radarscope in F-94, showing radar locking on targets. 12) AMS SV aerial tow target which is equipped with the radar reflector. Target leaves a hitting area approximately one fourth the size of a B-29. 13) CU radarscope in F-94 showing how the pilot steers toward target -- shows phase one and phase two, and how the radarscope ring narrows until firing time. 14) AMS nose of F-94, 24 nose rockets being fired in salvo. 15) MS & LS from camera in vertical stabilizer of F-94, 24 rockets being fired in salvo, tow target going through frame from R to L. F-94 then flies through smoke of exploding rocket. 16) ALS 3/4 RV F-94 firing rockets in salvo. 17) AMS to LS from camera in vertical stabilizer, firing in salvo and the tow target going through frame from R to L. 18) ACU SV aerial tow target, showing hits on same. 19) ALS two F-94C's flying from R to L. 20) MS from camera in vertical stabilizer of F-94, showing canopy and nose of F-94, aircraft approaching runway and landing. At end of landing, the F-94 canopy starts rising. NOTE: 22 tests were made to make corrections on the E-5 computer. 21) CU technicians loading wing pods with 2.75 folding fin rockets. 22) MS F-94C taking off from L to R -- shot from another ship taking off in formation. 23) AMS F-94 flying from L to R. 24) CU radarscope in F-94C, showing lock-on of target. 25) MS from camera in vertical stabilizer, showing firing rockets in salvo and tow target going through frame from R to L -- also shows hits on target. 26) ACU tow target, showing damage to the target by the rockets. 27) AMS from camera in vertical stabilizer, showing a test where all 48 rockets were fired simultaneously. 28) ACU tow target lines and radar reflector -- the tow target has been totally destroyed. 29) AMS from camera in vertical stabilizer of F-94, showing salvo of rockets and outlines of the B-29 over the target area. Film shows that on 17 of the 22 firings, from one to four rockets would have hit the aircraft. 30) AMS from camera in vertical stabilizer, showing clouds on horizon going round and round.
