NORTHROP RESEARCH FLYING WING AIRCRAFT, AND XP-56 Part 5

Description

Summary: Coverage of several research flights using small one-man type "Flying Wings" developed by Northrop Aircraft Corp. in conjunction with the Army Air Forces for the XB-35 "Flying Wing" program. (Photo'd by WCUS). Reel 1: Scenes are included of the following: 1) Takeoffs, flights, and landings of the MX-324, which was the first U.S. rocket interceptor plane successfully flown at Harper's Dry Lake, California, 5 July l944, Aircraft span is 30 feet -- pilot lies prone. (Reference: Flying, February 1954, page 23). 2) CU's of the rocket exhaust nozzle. 3) Several shots of the civilian pilot, engineering staff, and several A.A.F. officers around the MX-324 and posed in front of it. 4) Takeoff, aerial views, and landing of the XP-56 aircraft (very good). 3) Engineering staff and A.A.F. officers gathered around the plane as the pilot climbs down from cockpit. 6) Aerial views of another type of one-man fing wing, the N-9M. The aircraft is powered by two pusher props, in line piston engines in streamlined nacelles above the wing, and pilot is seated in normal position. The aircraft, equipped with retractable landing gear, is shown in level flight, climbing, banking, diving, and landing. The N-9N was used for pilot indoctrination for the "Flying Wing" type aircraft (fair to good footage). Good (Basic: Print Basic)
