Military Mess Part 8
Description
This video recording is of a "CNN Presents" special that examines the "environmental poison" left behind by the U.S. military after the Cold War. The show first profiles the phaseout of Fort Ord, California, where abandoned target ranges, shell fragments, and stored munitions posed significant environmental hazards. Next is a story from Cape Cod, Massachusetts, where burning artillery propellant and a landfill at nearby Otis Air Force Base were suspected as causes of increased cancer rates and other health concerns. Hazards of chemical weapons are discussed next, particularly chemical weapon storage at Kentucky's Blue Grass Army Depot and chemical weapons incineration in Tooele, Utah and Johnston Island. The program then examines U.S. responsibility for contamination at overseas bases, and radioactive contamination of the Columbia River and other areas near a plutonium production plant in Hanford, Washington.
