Fireworks Safety Press Conference Part 1

Description

This film covers a Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) 1988 Fireworks Safety News Conference. In it, Terrance Scanlon, the Chairman of the CPSC, made opening remarks about CPSC's efforts to decrease injuries caused by fireworks. Scanlon described the CPSC's efforts to stop the importation of illegal fireworks. In San Francisco, the CPSC began seizing illegal fireworks in cooperation with custom officials. Operation Midwest Thunder and Operation Eastern Thunder confiscated millions of fireworks at their point of entry into the United States. Of particular concern to Scanlon were dragon eggs, cherry balls, flashing thunder, twitter glitter, and big bombs. John Roger, the CPSC fireworks expert, demonstrated the hazards of misusing and using illegal fireworks. He showed the dangers of sparklers, firecrackers, short fuse burn times, unstable base hazards, and illegal M-100s. Scanlon closed the news conference by offering safety tips to parents and users of firecrackers.
