NEGATIVE SCRIBING FOR MAP REPRODUCTION Part 5
Description
Shows the details of the procedures involved in preparing negatives for map reproduction by hand scribing. Sheet coating, guide copy preparation, and close-ups of the various scribing operations and instruments are presented. Various engraving tools are shown, along with the techniques for sharpening and using them. The film begins by showing the assembly of the mosaic negative made from the field and compilation manuscripts, then demonstrating the process of coating plastic sheets with paint, for later use as the scribing bases. It is noted that any stable, transparent material, including glass, can be used. The technique of applying, drying, and even sanding the scribe coat paint after curing on the scribe base is detailed along with the creation of the various scribing guides from the negative mosaic which is used to prepare the various scribing bases for the color separation process. Each of the scribe bases is shown being scribed for detail in the various colors that will be used in the map's final printing. Also shown is the application of the stick-on lettering and the contour numbering. However, the making of the letter/number type is not detailed in this film.
