F.D.R. Gets Big Birthday Cake (Universal Newsreel, Jan 1941)

Description

The original release sheet reads: 1A. F.D.R. GETS BIG BIRTHDAY CAKE: WASHINGTON, D.C. - A huge cake, 5 feet high and weighing 300 pounds, is presented to Pres. Roosevelt by William Green, A.F. of L. chief, in honor of the President's 59th birthday and the March of Dimes Drive. Thousands of coins pour into the White House in the infantile paralysis fund drive. 1B. RUSH PLANE ENGINES FOR BRITAIN: INDIANAPOLIS, IN - Interesting pictures taken in the Allison Airplane Motor plant, where hundreds of skilled workers and intricate machines turn out engines for Britain and the U.S. A vital part in our national defense program. 1C. ANOTHER U.S. SUB LAUNCHED: VALLEGJO, CA - Despite a downpour of rain, hundreds look on as the U.S.S. Gudgeon, another in Uncle Sam's growing submarine fleet, slides down the ways. The U.S. is planning a big undersea force. 1D. A MILLION DOLLAR MISTAKE!: CARVER, MA - (Exclusive) Andrew Paanenen, a carpenter, gets a check from the gov't for soil conservation at his cranberry bog—and the check is $1,000,000 too much. He's "King for a Day" but he can't cash it! 1E. FAMOUS ART TREASURES SHOWN: NEW YORK, NY - Some of the World's priceless art treasures are shown to the public for the first time, as the fabulous, $50,000,000 collection of William Randolph Hearst goes on sale at Gimbel Brothers. 1F. FISHERMEN BUILD A CITY ON ICE: BOYNE CITY, MI - Here's a fish story that didn't get away. "Smeltania," a city on ice, built by those who love their smelt fishing but not the cold winds! Shacks protect 'em—and some each 'em right off the hook! 2. TWIN HAT STYLES FOR MA AND PA: CHICAGO, IL - A novel method of preventing arguments over hats! Husband and wife are to wear "twin hats." Some swanky "duet" creations are shown—and some are funny, as usual. 3A. "HUSKY" CREW HAS BIG TURN-OUT: SEATTLE, WA - National champs last year and heading for another banner year! A record squad of 261 oarsmen turn out for Spring practice. Eight shells get away for a trial run under the watchful eye of Coach Ulbrickson. 3B. BIG AQUAPLANE A SEAGOING CLUB: MIAMI, FL - Probably the world's biggest aquaplane—28 feet long and 8 feet wide, has been fitted out as a floating beach club. Dancing, beach sports and a bar, too—a sight that astounds local yachtsmen. 3C. FILM STARS VIE WITH GOLF ACES: RANCHO SANTA FE, CA - Screen notables compete with national champs in Bing Crosby's 58th annual tournament, with Bing himself taking part. Sam Snead holes out to win—but the "stars" aren't bad at all. 3D. AQUACADE STARS SHINE IN SOUTH: MIAMI BEACH, FL - In a southern setting at the Deauville pool, mermaids thrill visitors with a breath-taking show of fancy swimming. An exhibition that will make you want to head South—now!
