Easter in America (Universal Newsreel, Apr 1944)

Description

The original release sheet reads: 1. EASTER IN AMERICA: America at war, observes a solemn and reverential Easter. At Arlington we observe the colorful Knight Templar's services. General George Marshall places a cross of lilies at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, with Eleanor Roosevelt in attendance.—The Cherry Blossom Festival, with the National Capitol standing sentinel in the background is graced by attractive girls from all the service branches.—Down at Fort Benning, GA, 15,000 service men and women are seated in a gigantic human cross formation, as the sun rises on their outdoor Easter Service.—St. Patrick's Cathedral is the heart of Easter observance on Fifth Avenue. Resplendent WACs, WAVEs, SPARs and Cadet Nurses monopolize attention in the annual Easter Parade. 2. JAP CRUISER BOMBED: RABAUL HARBOR - Marvelous air pictures of a trim Jap cruiser getting the "setting sun" bombed out it. Our attacking plane knocks the wing off of a Jap fighter plane—then the Nip cruiser below is mercilessly attacked with high explosive bombs. We see hits and near hits, ad leave the spoiled sea beauty, wreathed in smoke. 3. $500,000 FIRE: SAN FRANCISCO, CA - Second Government warehouse fire in the same week causes high damage and destroys cold storage plant designed to house food for South Pacific export. 4. MOVIES IN WAR BOND RIVE: N.Y.C. - Sec. Henry Morgenthau, Jr. accepts giant record book from Charles Skouras, Movie Magnate who directed the Motion Picture Industry's 4th War Loan Drive to success. Book gives graphic record of the entire drive. 5. MOVIES CELEBRATE GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY: 1944 marks the fiftieth milestone for the moving picture industry in its provision of entertainment and news coverage for the public.—We trace the early development of the movies--from the genius's hand of inventor Thomas Edison—through the first "peep show" in Manhattan--and the first movie studio (which was dependent upon the sun for lighting.)—We reproduce a film made at this "Black Maria" studio, fifty years ago, as we show Gentleman Jim Corbett boxing with a Mr. Courtney. We follow highlights in Teddy Roosevelt's life--we watch magicians. Coquettish limbs raised havoc in a barber shop in 1901, suffragettes marched for their ballots, and belles in swishing skirts paraded on Easter.—Biograph filed the Times Square of 1894, as they caught the creeping traffic of the horse-drawn cars at Fulton Street and Broadway. UNIVERSAL PICTURES, in step with the tempo of the times, presented a super spectacle of love among the Indians, with the prize beauty falling into the arms of the bravest of the brave.—Now the moving picture industry enters another half-century of entertainment and news coverage. 6. BATHING SCANTIES: COLLEGE INN, CHICAGO - (Exclusive) Stunning girls delightfully pose in latest type bathing suits, divided into two pieces. A flash-back reveals early 20th century bathing beauties, buttoned up from chin to shoe tops. Hidden or exposed, there is an abundance of allure in both cases. 7. MIDDIES SPRING PRACTICE: ANNAPOLIS - Middies' grid squad opens spring training under the eagle eye of their new coach, Commander "Swede" Hagberg. They appear ready for any battle, right now. 8. DEVIL DIVER WINS: JAMAICA TRACK, N.Y.C. - 45,000 fans wager $500,000 (give or take a few thousand) on Paumonok Handicap. Apache leads, but Ted Atkinson boots Devil Diver home, the winnah.
