WOMEN GET VOTE IN ITALY: ROME - For the first time in 26 years, Italians go to the polls to vote in democratic elections, and for the first time in history, the women cast their ballots. 3. PERSONALITIES ON THE CAPITAL SCENE: Leon Blum, French envoy who is here seeking a U.S. loan, meets with Ambassador Bonnet before visit to White House.—Trygve Lie, UNO Secretary, confers with Pres. Truman and State Secretary Byrnes on eve of UNO conference in N.Y.—Lt. Gen. Walter B. Smith, our new ambassador to Russia, gets last-minute instructions from President before departure to Moscow.—Julius "Cap" Krug, new Commerce Secretary, is sworn in as successor to Harold Ickes. 4. FIESTA TIME ON THE RIVIERA: VIAREGGIO, ITALY - The gaiety and revelry of pre-war days sweeps away the despairs of post-war depression for countless thousands as they turn out to glimpse the fantastic floats that make this Carnival world-famous. 6. 500 TONS OF POWDER BLASTED: LAWRENCE, KS - Spectacular explosions mark Army disposal of one million pounds of contaminated smokeless powder in 18,000-lb. lots.
