Description

The original release sheet reads: 1. 1949 IN REVIEW - The Editors of Universal Newsreel present dramatic picture highlights of the year in review. / POLITICS - The inauguration of Harry S. Truman as President of the U.S. for another term is a major event of the past year. In Canada, Louis Saint-Laurent succeeds MacKenzie King as Prime Minister. 2. THE COLD WAR - The Berlin Airlift, "Operation Vittles," brings an about-face from Russia and a lifting of the blockade. A new West Germany state is born, representing another victory for the allies, as Marshall Plan aid helps turn the tide in Europe. 3. COMMUNISM - The world divided into two camps. Freedom versus communism. The persecution of Cardinal Mindzenty brings a mighty outpouring of religious outrage. In Yugoslavia, Tito's insurrection against Moscow represents a victory for the west, but the loss of China is a crushing blow. In the U.S., the trial of the top communist leaders brings into sharp focus the battle of ideologies. 4. DISASTERS - 1949 was a year of disasters, tragedies of nature and man-made. Thousands perished in the Ecuador earthquake, and the blizzards in our own western plains brought suffering and death. Aviation disasters continued to make headlines, and the steamer Noronic fire at Toronto. 5. WEDDINGS - Romance and wedding bells to lift the hearts of mankind. Rita and her Prince, Aly Khan, take the limelight on the Riviera. In Saint Louis, another wedding of the year—Vice-Pres. Barkley and Mrs. Hadley posing smilingly for a world to see and be thrilled. 6. THE ATOM BOMB - The startling news that Soviet Russia had exploded an atom bomb brought the world face to face with a new reality. As U.N. Assembly President Romulo pointed out, we must control the bomb or face certain peril. What will 1950 bring? That is the big question mark as 1949 becomes history.
